Trading Shoes at Lincoln Center
People-watching is indeed my favorite New York City sport, and Alice Tully Hall’s American Table Cafe and Bar at Broadway at West 65th Street is one of the best places to hone my skills. Not only does the entire world seem to walk by, but often its inhabitants do silly things.
Just beyond the cafe’s glass facade facing Broadway there is a large opening in the sidewalk for a stairway to the subterranean No. 1 train platform of the 66th Street-Lincoln Center subway station.
It is mid-September. Two teenage girls clad in blue-jean shorts and short-sleeved tops exit from the stairway, stop at the top of the stairs and chat while looking at each other’s shoes. One is wearing flats and the other low-cut hiking boots without socks.
They walk into the cafe’s outside seating area, sit down, take off their respective shoes, switch shoes and put them on. They stand up and take turns at modeling each other’s shoes as if they were on a fashion runway. Satisfied that the shoes fit, and look good on each other, they continue on their way.
Why did they do this? Don’t ask me. I am only a man.
