Fear of failure stops women from starting their own business
It was a remarkable moment when 14-year-old Honor Evans stepped up to give her debut public speech before a packed audience of experienced and budding social entrepreneurs in London.
With a confidence defying her years, Honor explained how she had gone about turning her idea for ‘up-cycling’ unwanted shoes destined for landfill into her own environmentally friendly social enterprise, Once Loved Shoes.

Honor is one of a growing number of young people who are turning their passions into businesses tackling some of the problems they see in society.
A recent RBS survey shows a sharp rise in the number of young people who are in the process of starting their own enterprises. A quarter of young people would like to start a business which uses some of its profits and business methods for the good of society or the environment.
Women, especially, are more likely to want to start a social enterprise than men - 24 per cent compared with 16 per cent.
However, the survey also suggests that a lack of confidence could be holding back many young women from starting their own business. Only 11 per cent of young women between the ages of 18 and 30 are starting their own businesses, compared with 19 per cent of young men.
More than 60 per cent of the surveyed women admitted that fear of failure would stop them trying to start their own business, compared with just over 50 per cent of men.
Additionally only 37 per cent of women believed they had the ability and skills to set up their own business, compared to 47 per cent of men.

What advice would Mital give to another young woman who is thinking about starting her own social venture?
“Be fearless,” she advises. “Have faith in your own abilities and your own nature. Be patient with the business as it will not be an overnight success, but requires hard work and effort. If you feel that you can put in the time and effort, explore all the avenues that will help you make it a success”.
Sophia believes young women will develop their confidence if they take the plunge and just “do it.”
