'Rocker sole' shoes no more effective than trainers for back pain

'Rocker sole' shoes, which have a thicker than average sole and a curved heel, have long been marketed as a shoe to reduce lower back pain.

According to the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) measurement of disability, those in the rocker sole group reduced their disability by 3.1 points. Meanwhile, the trainers group reduced their disability by 4.4 points. 


Ultimately, at the end of six months of wear, 53 per cent of the trainers group and just 31 per cent of the rocker sole group experienced a minimal yet clinically important improvement in disability. 

Dr MacRae, a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, explained, “Rocker sole shoes seem to be no more beneficial than trainers in affecting disability and pain outcomes in people with chronic LBP. 

"Furthermore, our study shows that trainers appear to be more beneficial for lower back pain aggravated by standing or walking than rocker sole shoes”. 

MacRae recommends that people not be swayed by "persuasive advertising", which claims that an unstable curved sole can "positively influence mechanisms associated with lower back pain".
