Draft of video surveillance policy presented to Student Government

On Friday, Student Government heard a presentation of a proposed policy to make campus safer.

Director of Human Resources Sherrie Senkfor went before Student Government to present a draft of the Campus Safety and Security Video Surveillance and Monitoring Policy. This policy would put rules and regulations into effect for anyone watching the video from a remote location.

Currently, approximately 50 percent of surveillance video is reviewed on campus, according to Senkfor. The majority of the videos are only reviewed if a crime is committed or if the tape is viewing a cash register.

The policy will protect campus employees from being watched remotely and disciplined for infractions unless a crime is committed.

“Video monitoring will not be used in the evaluation of employee performance, to monitor employment-related duties or functions or as evidence for reprimand, discipline or arbitration purposes,” the policy states. “However, SIUE may use video surveillance evidence or information for disciplinary purposes if the evidence or information reveals a criminal act or criminal offense committed by an employee.”

This policy will not dictate the installation of additional cameras.

Senkfor said a listing of where security cameras are will not be made public in an effort to maintain the safety of the SIUE community.

External Affairs Officer Alexa Hillery thinks that the video surveillance policy will further promote safety on campus.

“I definitely think it’s great that we are getting a surveillance policy on campus,” Hillery said. “Obviously, we already have surveillance on campus. So, I think it’s a great thing that we’ll be having a policy that’ll regulate that.”

The policy will dictate that all surveillance will be conducted in public areas in compliance with state and federal privacy laws. The school will also have to post signs to alert the community to video surveillance monitoring, if required by law.

“I read through it and there are certain things saying there will have to be signs posted,” Hillery said.Bref, depuis longtemps, j'ai envie d'essayer des roues carbone à boyaux.Je ne sais pas si c'est une bonne solution, mais bon, j'ai envie. “I think that’s really good for students to know and guests to the university to know if they might be recorded,I want my Hiking footwear and other outdoor footwear to last a long time, even with regular use and abuse. if they might be on camera.”

Senator Jeremy Asiedu thinks the surveillance policy is good for the campus in more ways than one.

“I think, in order to make our campus a safer environment, to make students feel more comfortable about coming to our university and to maintain our status with being one of the safest universities in the nation,” Asiedu said, “I think it’s very important that we begin to implement more policies about video surveillance.”

SG also reviewed its funding rules and made revisions. The senators agreed to the majority of the changes. Some were as small as wording changes. Others provide further guidelines for funding requests. The senators unanimously voted against the addition of a regulation that would not allow organizations to ask for funds allotted to decorations.

Asiedu said SG’s decision to allow decoration funding is a good thing.

“With so much restriction on what we can do with our events,Light Hiking shoe: Resembling burly running shoes, these low-cut models with flexible midsoles are excellent for day hiking. it makes it harder to learn and to grow,” Asiedu said. “I think that it’s important to have a little more leeway when it comes to decorations because that’s part of life — learning experiences.”

Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Pi chapter had its constitution’s revisions approved. The fraternity had not updated its constitution since 1988. The update eliminated hazing from the document and reduced the number of secretaries and treasurers from two to one of each.

According to the executive board of SG, most student organization constitutions are supposed to be revised yearly or every two years, but SG rarely sees revisions.

This group will provide information for pharmacy students about what is available for pharmacists in medical fields to benefit future careers.

Last week’s unofficial election results were presented to SG for review. They will vote to approve the results at the next meeting, which will be at 2 p.m. April 19 in the Morris University Center’s Goshen Lounge.
