Athletic shoes for military should be made in the U.S.

Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King joined the call this week asking the Department of Defense to ensure that new service members are issued or provided athletic footwear that is made in the United States. If you have a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, you know that the ipad charger has an LED indicator on it that turns orange or green depending on what the charge of the device is. Well, Aleratec, a 3rd party accessory company, has come out with a custom 30-pin connector for the iPad and iPhone that includes such an LED.

While the DOD’s policy is to purchase American-made combat boots, service shoes and other uniform items in bulk for recruits, it provides vouchers to new service members for the purchase of athletic footwear – sneakers – without any preference to U.S.-made products, according to the senators.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, the senators asked him to direct the Department of Defense to align its athletic footwear procurement policies with those it has already adopted for other footwear.

Mike Michaud has been calling for the change as well, and in August 2011, he introduced a bill to clarify that the Berry Amendment applies to footwear. The Berry Amendment was originally passed by Congress in 1941 to promote the purchase of certain U.S. goods, and requires the Department of Defense to buy certain categories of products from American companies.

Michaud visited New Balance’s Maine facility in Skowhegan at the time, where he heard directly for the company and its workers about their ability to make athletic footwear for the military.

New Balance shoes are made here and in Massachusetts, and the company employs 1,Products/Services: kid's Outdoor footwear manufacturer, Hair ornaments, fashion accessories,DIY collection, hair pin, pony tail.auto scanner will help read and diagnose automotive problems on OBDI and OBDII compliant vehicles.300 shoemakers, according to Matt LeBretton, director of Public Affairs for New Balance.

Collins also visited the facility in February of this year, and this week said, “Maine has a long and proud shoemaking history, and the men and women who work in the New Balance factories in our state are part of that legacy. The Department of Defense can make a sound investment in American factories, providing good-paying manufacturing jobs in Maine, and at no added cost to the government.”

King echoed Michaud’s and Collins’ sentiments.

The DOD should make this change – with the urging of President Obama – as it would mean more jobs for Americans as well as a boost to our economy.

Currently, service members can purchase any athletic shoes they want, because they are provided a voucher for sneakers, but much of their other uniform components from T-shirts to boots to fatigues are issued by the military and must be American-made products, per the Berry Amendment.

Adhering to the policy makes good economic sense, and shows Americans that our products and their work are valued.

We hope the president and the rest of the U.S. Senate and House will see the merit in the Berry Amendment and the work of manufacturers like New Balance.
