From its first tentative steps, a charity collecting shoes for children in the Dominican Republic is really starting to stride along.I want my Hiking footwear and other outdoor footwear to last a long time, even with regular use and abuse.
Ruben’s Shoes was started by Port Moody insurance broker Kelly Strongitharm to collect shoes after she went to the Caribbean nation to visit Ruben, the little boy she had been sponsoring through World Vision.

When Strongitharm visited the Dominican last year, she saw how desperate conditions were and decided to help out by collecting children’s shoes that are often barely worn when they are outgrown.
She and her partners in Ruben’s Shoes had collected hundreds of shoes by March, with the goal of filling a cargo container.
Richmond’s Janet Yau, whose son Tysen attends Lord Byng, read about the campaign in The Province.
“It struck a chord with me for several reasons, especially being a parent,” she said Thursday.
“It was a reminder that kids in developing countries like the Dominican Republic often go without shoes. We take so much for granted in North America. This is an opportunity for us to help out.Monster headphones and Speakers. Life is Too Short to Listen to Bad Headphones.”
While Lord Byng has led the charge for Ruben’s Shoes in Richmond, other elementary schools such as Garden City, wholesale original shoes Hamilton, McKinney and Westwind are also participating.

“We’ve been inundated with shoes this week,” said Yau. “It’s been incredible.”
In addition to teaching Lord Byng students about empathy and compassion, Yau said there may be a bigger effect.
“It’s going to hopefully inspire other schools, groups, individuals [to realize] that you can make a difference,” she said.
Strongitharm is happy with the response her idea has generated.
“I think it’s fascinating,” she said. “It’s exploded beyond anything I could have dreamed.
“Every day something new comes up. It’s getting bigger and bigger.”
An event is planned for later this year with the Coquitlam Metro Ford soccer club that will bring in athletic gear, in addition to shoes.
White Rock artist April Lacheur is donating all the proceeds from an online sale of her works in May to Ruben’s Shoes. The works can be found at www.32auctions.com/yapespaints
A website is being built for Strongitharm’s growing operation, but it’s still not finished. In the meantime, anyone interested in the project or in helping the project should search “Ruben’s Shoes” on Facebook.
