However, Mayor Ron Brownlees today sent a letter to the minister's office asking for more money or an extension of the offer after the council last night decided to refuse the money.

Cr Brownlees said council had initially been offered $350,000 when the proposal was made, and that the new offer would leave ratepayers to foot the bill.

"It's a shame we had to knock it back, but we had quite a lengthy debate and we just couldn't justify it," Cr Brownlees said.

"We'd still take the money if we could use it for another community safety initiative."
