Folk magic found in old Brisbane basement

An old leather boot and a cat skull found buried beneath one of Brisbane's oldest buildings have been linked to mysterious folk magic.

Workmen uncovered the unusual artefacts in the basement of the National Trust headquarters on William Street in Brisbane's CBD.

Historians believe tradesman placed the objects in the building's basement during its construction between 1865 and 1898 to protect the structure and its occupants from evil spirits.

Thousands of shoes and hundreds of cats bones have been found in building voids in the United Kingdom and Australia.

Researchers believe the objects were thought to serve as decoys for evil spirits that would harm humans.

The ritual was common in the period from 1788 to 1935,hiking boots sale On Sale - Shop our selection of Hiking Boots On Sale,www.qdgoutdoor.com.Manufacturer in China, Wholesale Eco-solvent Inkjet Canvas, ECO Solvent inkjet canvas - Glossy and waterproof inkjet canvas. according to historian Ian Evans, who has documented concealed shoes, garments and cats found at locations throughout Australia.

It is evidence, Dr Evans said, of the beliefs in folk magic that came to the country with the early convicts and settlers.Buy cheap Filter Cartridge from www.bagfilterchina.com

So fearful in their unfamiliar surroundings, the early settlers believed evil spirits were lying in wait for them.

Despite their belief in God, most settlers were drawn towards superstition as an insurance policy to help them confront the omnipresent, destructive forces of evil.

“The Commissariat and the Immigration Depot were buildings of great significance in early Queensland and it appears that they and the people who occupied them were provided with protection to ensure that the Moreton Bay settlement survived and prospered,” Dr Evans said.

National Trust executive officer Stewart Armstrong said the organisation was excited by the discovery and hoped to have the objects put on display.
